This paper stems from the observation of post graduate students' difficulty in planning their research, particularly in designing the project, when they choose to use qualitative methodology. Such difficulties are mostly linked to the nature of the approach itself, as well as to the scarcity of related literature, often leading to uncongruous studies. The paper seeks to depict qualitative research, by typifying points of agreement and divergence among its several trends, and to give precise indications to project outlining, by analyzing and giving examples both of its essential features and of the choice of alternatives for the researcher in each case.
