Abstract

TAILLE, Yves de la; FLOR, Cristiane Marx  and  FEVORINI, Luciana Bittencour. Compulsory school education as seen by 7 to 14 year old students: hipothetical and moral duty. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1991, n.78, pp.27-40. ISSN 0100-1574.

The paper intends to expose and analyze interpretations that 100 students (7-14 year old, from a private and a public school in São Paulo) ascribe to the compulsory character of school education (duty of studying). Drawing on different approaches to the obligation by traditional and renewed pedagogies, two possibilities of understanding "duty of studying" were defined hypothetical and moral duty. Through clinic interviews with the children, dealing with a dilemma concerning the subject, most relevant results indicate an almost unanimity favouring hypothetic duty, and a marked preference, among public school students, for expiating sanctions. This arouses a discussion on the issues of intellectual autonomy versus heteronomy, and on implications of individualism to educational matters.
