The article discusses the training, performance and motivation of teachers at night middle schools attended by young workers, based on the observation of practices and on interviews with teachers from a night public school in São Paulo metropolitan area. As many teachers had experienced, and havereported on, their participation in the Night School Project (developed by the State's education board in 1984 and subsequently cut short), the article suggests a revival of the Project which, among other results, seems to have led to enhancing teachers' role and performance, favouring the interests of student-workers.
