After a brief historical overview on the presence of foreign scientists and professors in Brazil - especially at the higher education institutions created along the 30's - the article analyzes the processof hiring foreigh professors for Faculdade Nacional de Filosofia, founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1939. In order to assess their effective contribution to Brazilian scientific, cultural and economic development, the article examines the political involvement and the criteria used for their selection; the reaction their presence has raised among Brazilian professors and the media; and their specific contribution in terms of research and teaching for that college, which came to constitute the core of the University of Brazil.
