This paper describes a pioneering experience in Brazilian education colleges, of interdisciplinary, collective research and joint tutoring of masters' theses, set up at the Education College of the State University of Campinas in 1985. The model adopted is shown to be likely to overcome a series of problems in masters' tutoring. The article presents the subject of the collective research (on decentralizing basic education system), as well as the methodology used and an assessment of positive and negative aspects of the experience.
