Abstract

The article reports results of three studies about the role of social interaction in cognitive construction within situations of operational learning. Children's modes of social interaction, their individual participation and the adult's participation in groups of different numerical composition are exposed to qualitative analysis. The subjects attend preschool and the 1st grade at an elementary public school in Curitiba, PR. Results point to: a) an evolution in the modes of interaction related to subject's age and to the numerical composition of the groups; b) a prevailing sequence of social interaction ways; c) a relationship between some modes of interaction and the specific tasks involved; d) the lower relevance of children's intensive participation when compared to a higher-quality participation in task accomplishing; e) the ways children's participation is organized in poles, and adult's ways of participation.
