Drawing on the main trends identified in the approaches to educational research in the continent, from the 60's through current days, this paper discusses main conceptual challenges to be faced by research in the years to come, stressing and illustrating the need to overcome the current gap between macro and micro approaches to educational phenomena. The addresing of issues such as training of researchers, funding, and relationships between networks, educational research and policy making points to key improvements required in institutional framework, so as to increase research capacity to meet those challenges, having as central concerns the opportunities for the underprivileged and the building of a democratic order in the region.
