This paper discusses the contribution of the notion of patriarchal family as constructed by Gilberto Freyre in the 30's, to reflect on the issue of family morality among the urban poor. In a dialogue with recent literature on the family (and in spite of empirical studies that deny such family organization among lower strata), it stresses the contemporary and operational aspects of the notion as an ideological model for the analysis of family internal relationships.
