Abstract

FAVERO, Osmar; HORTA, José Silverio Baia  and  FRIGOTTO, Gaudêncio. Educational policies in Brazil: challenges and proposals. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1992, n.83, pp.5-14. ISSN 0100-1574.

After a brief overview of educational planning in Brazil since 1962, the paper points to the urge to devise an educational policy that meets present needs of Brazilian society, reflected by data on social and educational situation here presented and analyzed. On the other hand, current worldwide crisis of political, economic, and cultural paradigms imposes a radical criticism of the discourse on modernity issued from neo-liberalism, thus imposing the search for strategies for the country's international integration in a non-subordinate position. Such a framework determines main subjects on which to concentrate research and teaching efforts, so as to define the role of education for effective democracy in Brazilian society.
