Abstract

DAMIANI, Magda F.  and  BARROS, Fernando. Misjudging poor children?: Family income and motor development among 4-year old children. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1992, n.83, pp.52-57. ISSN 0100-1574.

This paper investigates the association between gross motor development and family income in a sample of 4-year old children from Pelotas (RS). South of Brazil. Among the 305 children tested through the Griffiths Mental Development Scales, those in the lowest income group lagged slightly behind in their gross motor abilities when compared to the rest of the sample. Although most psychological tests are viewed as bearing socioeconomic biases, it is argued that the scale used is less affected by such sources of error and that present findings reflect the process of domination undergone by lower classes.
