The analysis of the country's main educational data discloses errors in official statistics provided by the Ministry of Education, thus misguiding policies. It is shown that, contrary to common belief, Brazilians do make huge efforts to educate themselves. The comparative analysis of students achievement among some countries shows that Brazil can not compete in a world of growing internationalization of capital and technology. Policy outlines are suggested to make up for the country's current disadvantages in terms of educational system efficency.
