Resumo

While compairing Brazilian and Chilean expanding high school enrolling processes, the author raises some doubts on the thesis which states that there is an agreement among different sections of society regarding the role of secondary school (high school) in the economical and social development in Latin America. She questions the linear relation which has been established between the use of new technologies and the convergence of interests of different social groups. The reasoning brings forth some data from several researches and studies carried out in the areas of Education, Labor Economics and labor Sociology. The article concludes that the modernity discourse, in spite of its irrecusable appeal, has to be carefully analysed by teachers and students, in order to detect its fallacies and contradictions, mainly when applied to schooling process.
