The Brazilian educational system achieved significant expansion especially since the second half of the century. In spite of this, Brazil still has low educational levels, stressing that: they are below levels of other countries with similar features; they show deep racial disparities.This article, using data from the 1982 National Household Surveys analyses the working methods of the teaching system within the context different results achieved by racial groups: it approaches pupils approval, failure, and drop-out rates and also some indicators on achievement in Education. The educational levels achieved by black and mulattos are systematically below those from other racial groups.Therefore, it is evident that the variable race still stands for significant effects during this stage in life.
