Abstract

SILVA, Rose Neubauer da  and  DAVIS, Cláudia. Teacher training for basic education. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1993, n.87, pp.31-44. ISSN 0100-1574.

The present review of Brazilian and Latin American literature on teacher training for the first four grades of elementary school attempts to outline a profile of teachers, who trains them and how they are trained, and point to the need to review the structures of training institutions. Taking into account the present outline of public policiesin the continent, the paper suggests that teachers' role will suffer radical changes. While keeping the current roles of guiding the learning process and students' cognitive and social development, besides that of agents for school/community integration, teachers should be criative agents, able to assess at every moment the cultural bearings of education.
