The text analyzes the different agents that are present within the field of child assistance, considering children from zero to six years of age. Based on studies of the Movement for Nurseries (Movimento de Luta por Creches) in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, we discuss: the origin of the community nerseries, their relationship withthe female work and with the social and political context; the role of the supporting associations to the movement; the changes in the meaning of the right to nursery; the participation of the users within the community experience; paradoxes and ambiguities while fighting for nurseries to lower-class children.
