This article discusses the fundamental concepts present in the philosophy of educational renovation in Brazil between 1930 and 1945. It attempts to make clear the notion that innovative pedagogical thinking is strongly characterized by social concerns; in this context, the knowledge and techniques arising from Psychology are used as means to lend greater rationality to the school and the teacher's work. It is concluded that both Psychology and the social sciences furnish the "new school" with the theoretical basis for its foundation.
