This paper traces a demographic profile of the changes that have occurred amongst Brazilian families in the last two decades. It focuses on the complexity of the processes that caused these changes, using as background regional and racial differences. Using three contemporary aspects, it concludes with an analysis of the prospects for the future of the families. The three aspects are: demographic prognoses; social and economic policies; attitudes and opinions on marriage, children, and gender type relationships, and the like.
