The joint construction of play activities by 1-3 year-old children is focused in this paper through the description and analysis of two play episodes, video-recorded during free-play in a daycare center in the periphery of São Paulo. The framework of the analysis is the view of the child as an active agent of his/her development, and of social interaction as a privileged component of this process.
