This article attempts to contrast Francisco Campos' and Anísio Teixeira's concepts of the modern which in many ways mark the institutionalizing of contemporary Brazilian education. Campos' "modern" forged institutions which ended up constituting new educational agents. On the other hand, such institutions imposed the standardization of the other - the not-modern - without respecting the culture with which it interacted. Anisio's is the expression of the modern which negates educational models and accents autonomy in the educational task. This is an autonomy which demands recognition of that which is incorporated in the educational process without pretending to direct destiny, but to open up possibilities.
