The study assumes the perspective of the "states of the art" and focus on the process of evaluation in the brazilian elementary schools (7 to 14 years old students). The major concern is the evaluation process in a instructional context. It covers the period from 1980 to 1992. The articles analyzed have been published in eleven nationwide periodicals. A hundred and twenty four articles have been identified. The study was carried out by means of several categories: the nature of the study, the approach, the major themes and related aspects and the educational and/or evaluation theories.
