The article analyzes the trajectory of a group of private preschools, founded between the mid 70's and the beginning of the 80's, in the city of São Paulo. Historical aspects of the pedagogies developed in these experiences and their relationship to related elements of the political, social and cultural policies of the period in which they arose until the mid 80's are presented and discussed. In the analysis, the role the cultural changes that have been occurring in Brazil for about three decades had in their development is emphasized and these pedagogies are linked to what, at the time, was called "alternative".
