Based on a bibliographic research relative to the period from 1983 to the beginning of 1994, and integrated by dissertations in the area of Mathematics Education, by scientific periodicals and by divulgation periodicals directed to teachers, this study identifies the criticisms against the prevalent teaching model in the Mathematics teaching -- learning process and points out the renewal tendencies recorded in the Brazilian literature from the years 80-90. Implications to education and research are presented at the final.
