The text discourses on scholarships for masters and doctoral candidates in the country and their possible effects on student advancement. The data were obtained through a national sample of students linked to masters and doctoral level courses for Masters and Doctors in the country, in all fields of knowledge. The results allowed an analysis of the regional distribution of scholarships, their distribution by areas of study and outlines of the policies of the main development agencies -- CAPES (Centro de Aperfeiçoamento e Pesquisa do Ensino Superior --Center for Research and Improvement of Higher Education) and the CNPq (Centro Nacional de Pesquisas -- National Center for Research). The analysis is frequently located in the context of international comparisons. The results show that the scholarship have substantive influence in the advancement of students in their coursework, whose duration is discussed. The timeframes for degrees, considered as a characteristic of the students' academic trajectory, the pertinent comparisons with international standards and overall time invested in the production of the master's thesis -- on the average nearly two years -- have to do with the question of the concept and finality of master's degrees and its relationship to the doctorate.
