This article pretends to analyse diachronically and synchronically the processes of "construction" of a school in the city of Sapucaia, RJ, reported to be a "good school" by the teachers there, as well as by the students and other peoplein the city. The history of the school was reconstructed through a study inspired in ethnography, based on 61 interviews with different agents who have acted in the establishment over the last 50 years, as well as students, ex-students and older people from the community; from participatory observation over the course of a year, and consultation of documents. The concepts of habitus and "pedagogical capital" were used as was literature on effective schools. The features of the establishments were grouped in three dimensions: the institutional, the pedagogical and the cultural/social political (André, 1995). The data show that the school, during this period, suffered profound modifications related to the changs that occurred in society and in education, and that the parameters used to judge today´s "good school" have to be different than those of the past.
