The article studies the insertion of the right to education as one of the social rights of citizenship. It discusses forms of guaranteeing this right. It analyzes the relationship between the right to education and compulsory schooling, and accompanies the evolution of the concepts of compulsoryschooling and the right to education in the history of Brazilian education
