This article analyzes the debate on affirmative action in Brazil in the light of the bibliography about racism and the legal basis for equal opportunities. From this perspective, it challenges the critical visions to the implementation of reparatory policies, gathering evidence on the state’s participation in the legitimation of racial discrimination in the country. Such involvement is explored in the school institution context, examining the consequences of prejudice on the identity and selfesteem of black children and youth.
