This article deals with the personal and institutional relationships unleashed by the incorporation of the Teachers' Education School of the former Institute of Education into the Education Department of the Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras of the Universidade de São Paulo. The episodes reported concern the division of functions and status in the unit resulting from this incorporation, they show that, beyond the rational arguments and justifications of an epistemological nature, the Pedagogy and Didactics programs have been defined in the configuration of the field due to a conjunction of factors, such as internal disputes for power at the university, students' professional interests, rivalries between the fields of knowledge and struggles for status. It points out that the position of these programs, considered as being of lesser importance and even useless within the university, has a relationship with these conflicts and accommodations.
