Abstract

FREITAS, Marina Carvalho; ESTHER, Angelo Brigato  and  SANTOS, Joelma Cristina. DIVERSITY, STIGMATIZATION AND BELONGING IN THE UNIVERSITY CONTEXT. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 2023, vol.53, e09940.  Epub Sep 13, 2023. ISSN 1980-5314.  https://doi.org/10.1590/198053149940.

This research analyzed the process of stigmatization of students seen as outsiders in public universities and the ways in which they seek recognition and belonging in this context. To this end, race, gender and sexual diversity were considered conditions that, socially, still make certain groups vulnerable. Through individual interviews and focus groups, we identified identity (re)constructions resulting from the greater or lesser internalization of imputed stigmas, the way group belonging is articulated in the academic environment and the way the university presents itself in the students’ trajectory. It is considered that this study provides a greater understanding of the role of the university institution for those considered outsiders and articulates relevant concepts in this field.
