The present article seeks to detect plural meanings attached to educational research, as gleaned from the discourses of Doctors in Education teaching and researching in the School of Education at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, taken as a case study. The relevance of the study is enhanced particularly in a time when the role of research has been put into question by teacher education projects and policies. We argue that the understanding of research and its relevance as discursive constructions inextricably linked to the researcher as a multicultural subject may help go beyond master narratives about the subject, as well as contribute to a plural identity formation of future teachers and researchers.
