With the aim of making some of the basic concepts of theatre pedagogy more precise, this study examines the notions of theatre game, dramatic play and jeu dramatique, starting from the origin of those concepts, their basic principles and looking at authors who have discussed these issues. The repercussion of these different practices in Brazil points to a differentiation. While the processes based on theatre games and on jeu dramatique use the language of drama as their guiding principle, the practices of dramatic play reject dramatic art as a foundation for a pedagogy for children and young people, using instead children’s make-believe and the notion of dramatization.
