Abstract

LEITE, Denise  and  PANIZZI, Wrana Maria. L’ esprit du temps e o surgimento da Universidade no Brasil. Educ. Real. [online]. 2005, vol.30, n.02, pp.273-290. ISSN 0100-3143.

This article discusses the possibility of a relation between the Modernist Movement and the emergence of universities in Brazil in the 1930s due to a self-constructed spirit of innovation derived from the Week of 22. Challenging old structures in art also brought about transformations in Brazilian politics, society, and education. Founded on the study of Pre-Modernism and Modernism, the article argues that the Brazilian University was anthropophagic at birth, experiencing the dialectics of construction-deconstruction of values and perceptions, which provided the university its identity and shape. The article supports the idea of a university that, through self-reform, will achieve the most innovative frontiers of universal knowledge, without forgetting its local cultural foundation, and keeping its specificities and the quality of its differences.
