Based on the definition of education as initiation into inherited traditions, this paper aims to establish the education for citizenship with a focus in the past, as opposed to the proposals in vogue - compétences, postconvencionnalité - establishing this focus in the present or in the future. Therefore, this article examines the polysemy of the concept of citizenship, the impact of the lack of boundaries between public and private for the definition of public space, the effect of oscillation between universalism and communitarianism to the definition of political collectivity, which influences the definition of education for citizenship. This article also examines the differences between ðáéäåéá and education to conclude that only the latter concept can exist at the Modern Age.
