Considering the legitimacy of the environmental issues while reasoning about social conflicts, in the composing of institutional spheres and building of the new social acts (Lopes, 2006), we direct our analysis to solid residue recycling activities and to the collective organizations derived from these. Here we seek to follow movements and configurations of the environmental field (Carvalho, 2005; 2002) together with the activities related to harvesting, selecting, and commercialization of solid residues in the city of Porto Alegre, in an attempt to comprehend the relationship established between workers of the selection units with the environment while discussing the symbolic universe. We start from the narration of the operative subjects, including unit workers, technical personnel, public personnel, along with other partners, considering life and work historical facts and their decision making, observing how, as they are assigned in a field that both precedes and surpasses them, they then recreate it.
