The desert of contemporary society is analysed as the result of a dinamics in which modern man understands his own humanity in view of his capacity to dominate nature as well as other men, that is, to a situation whose roots are to be found in the way contemporary man relates to reality and to his own humanity. In this context, the desert appears as the desertion of a space common to all. Nonetheless, although this metaphor expresses the reality of a destitute time, the desert can also reveal potencials of creativity and possibilities of renewal.
