This article presents and analyses the process of the marketization of higher education. Firstly, the trajectory of higher education as a commercial service is presented, highlighting from Adam Smiths arguments to the proposals of the World Bank and WTO. Secondly, characteristic aspects of the marketization such as hybrid regulation, managerialism, private financing and the teaching and research for the market are discussed. Finally, this study proposes a concept for the phenomenon of the marketization of higher education.
