Abstract

This paper developed the analysis of the form and the content of one-week news articles published by the newspaper O Globo in 2006, in order to elucidate the mechanisms build by the newspaper to reinforce representations of failure on full-time public schools. The theory of social representations was used to explicit the relationship established between the image of the school and its evaluation. The news articles have updated the arguments of the past without the present context, legitimating the abandonment of the project of full time public schools. The manipulation of images and information inverts the responsibility for the presumed failure: sometimes it is attributed to the pupils, through their life histories; sometimes to the school itself, preserving the authorities from the responsibility by the lack of objective conditions to function.
