This paper is a comparative study that presents a search focused on the figure of the male teacher who works in the “elementary” public education in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil and in Aveiro - Portugal. We intended, fundamentally, to investigate the reasons and consequences of teachers’ professional choice who are engaged in area typically associated to women, if they are satisfied or suffering teacher malaise. We explain that the presence of male teachers in the teaching of this segment is a way of including the issues of gender in the education, showing that there are other issues and other voices that echo in the schools, or capable persons of exercising this profession regardless of gender. We conclude that, despite of the teacher malaise, the man can choose this activity by pleasure and get success.
