POLLOCK, Linda. Education and cultural training in the English home 1550-1800. Educ. Real. [online]. 2010, vol.35, n.03, pp.17-35. ISSN 0100-3143.

This article argues for an expanded understanding of the concept of education. It examines the socialization of children in the early modern English home. It looks at the role played by parents in the religious instruction and academic education of their children. It also investigates how children were groomed to take their place in their culture and society. Early modern English parents stressed the importance of good manners, respectable conduct and demeanor, respect for authority, and the need for a well developed moral code. Although parents had a clear set of values they wished to instill into their children, they did not wish to cow their children into accepting them. Instead parents strove to make sure their children were kept hard at work and understood that good behavior would be rewarded.
