Resumen

BUCKINGHAM, David. Digital culture, media education and the place of schooling. Educ. Real. [online]. 2010, vol.35, n.03, pp.37-58. ISSN 0100-3143.

In this paper, I seek to address some of the challenges that are posed for schools by young people’s emerging digital cultures; the idea that the school is an outdated institution, and that its demise is either imminent and anticipated. I question the rather account of young people’s relationships with digital media inevitably liberating or empowering, this technology is promotes more spontaneous and informal styles of learning; I also challenge the idea that technology merely offers a more efficient way for schools to achieve their traditional mission. I argue that schools can play a more proactive role, by offering both critical perspectives and participatory opportunities in relation to new media and that young people’s participation in cyberworlds does raise some fundamental questions about the future of the school as an institution.
