Abstract

PICCOLI, Luciana. Literacy: history and concepts. Educ. Real. [online]. 2010, vol.35, n.03, pp.257-275. ISSN 0100-3143.

The definition of the phenomenon of literacy is linked to the different views cast upon such process. The present theoretical investigation deals with the history of this concept as approached by several authors inside a segment of the production of scholars in the educational field, therefore assuming the character of a bibliographical research. Initially, an in-depth analysis of the origin of the word literacy is made, leading, afterwards, to the delimitation of the reaches of literacy - encompassing the elements of orality, reading and writing - and to the specification of the concepts of practices and events based on New Literacy Studies, given their theoretical-methodological productivity for the development of researches in education. As a result of this study, the multiple and social character of the literacy practices that are described through observable events and understood in their context of origin becomes evident.

Keywords : Literacy; Orality; Reading and Writing; Literacy Practices and Events.
