Abstract

ROBERTSON, Susan  and  DALE, Roger. Researching education in a globalizing. Educ. Real. [online]. 2011, vol.36, n.02, pp.347-363. ISSN 0100-3143.

Era. In this paper we argue that whilst the education sector has undergone significant changes as a consequence of processes broadly associated with globalization, many of the categories through which we have approached the analysis of the sector tend to be applied as if it were business as usual. We have called these assumptions a set of isms; that is, that the tendency to see the world as unchanged. In order to research education in a globalising era, we argue that researchers must be attentive to the changed nature of the state and its relationship to education, to the national as the primary node in education governance, to the assumption that education as a sector is made up of those same components (actors, interests, mechanisms) as in the past, and that space itself is an inert background against which all of these changes are taking place. By bringing to the fore, and making visible, these assumptions, we hope to also bring into view an education sector that is undergoing dramatic change in form, content and outcome.
