CARSPECKEN, Phil Francis. Critical Qualitative Research: basic concepts. Educ. Real. [online]. 2011, vol.36, n.02, pp.395-424. ISSN 0100-3143.

This article reviews basic concepts associated with critical qualitative research. A theory of meaning based on communicative pragmatics is explained and illustrated so as to guide the critical qualitative researcher in the reconstruction of the implicit domains and structures of meaningful action, including the talk that participants provide during interviews. A theory of human identity is presented, distinguishing between components of identity (I, we, me, and self-narrative) and relating the identity claim to the theory of meaning. The concept of social systems is also explained because system analysis is often an important feature of critical qualitative research, used to catch and bring to light such things as cultural reproduction, social reproduction, resistance and various forms of system change. These concepts are all connected within an integrated critical social theory and are meant to be used flexibly and creatively by the critical qualitative researcher when designing and conducting research.
