Abstract

ZUIN, Antonio Alvaro Soares. The university hazing as spectacular violence. Educ. Real. [online]. 2011, vol.36, n.02, pp.587-604. ISSN 0100-3143.

The origins of hazing are as old as the origins of the university itself. Barbarism as committed by older students against younger students in the beginning of their university lives can be observed since the first European universities. The main objective of this article is to investigate the historic determinations of hazing and to argue that, in front of the so called spectacular society, this practice finds in the new technologies a very productive space not only to be spread but also to reinforce its growth. In this society, only the cruelest images, including hazing, stand out from the others and thus get the attention of the consumers, who become avid for contact with increasingly shocking and aggressive audiovisual stimuli.

Keywords : Hazing; University; Society of the Spectacle; Critical Theory; Cultural Industry.
