Questions about teacher formation cause concern for the production of meanings which allows for an understanding and an intervention in formative processes. These processes are impregnated with ideologies and values, which are not always noticed, but manifest themselves in practice and in discourse. The text provides an analysis of the policies which have influenced initial teacher formation in Brazil and it also contributes to a reflection on the concepts which affect the field of teacher formation. Contemporary authors and the results of research are used to substantiate the arguments presented in the text.
