This article presents the results of a research into elements identified in records relating to the teaching of literacy in municipal schools in Duque de Caxias, RJ, expressed in texts of the "memories" genre. By analyzing the content of such narratives, it was possible to explain what references literacy teachers use to build their relations with the teaching and the learning of reading and writing. An analysis of the narratives of these teachers pointed to issues related to the teacher as reference for learning to read and write and to certain didactic-pedagogical aspects of knowledge in literacy as essential to the constitution of teacher professionalism.
