The undeveloped character of the strategies of classification for podcasting in the field of education is a reflecltion of its newness. Based on the as yet scant literature in the field, this paper which originated in the thesis, Podcasts in Brazilian education: nature, potentiality and implications of a communication technology, analyzes the classifications made by Medeiros (2005) and Carvalho (2009), noting the consistency of their criteria and their relationship with the possibilities for educational use of this technology. This analysis, allied to an observation of the scenario of social use of such technology and research in the field, will serve as input for the prepartion of a new draft of a classification of podcasts, based on the conclusion that consistent criteria, coordinated with the various current ways of using this technology, are an initial requisite if it is to be considered in educational practices.
