Abstract

RODRIGUES, Fabiana de Cássia. Florestan Fernandes - a Brazilian interpreter in a critical dialogue with pionners of education. Rev. Inter Ação [online]. 2016, vol.41, n.1, pp.65-82. ISSN 0101-7136.  https://doi.org/10.5216/ia.v40i3.35882.

The article analyzes the contribution from one of the principal interpreters of Brazil, the sociologist Florestan Fernandes, framing the educational challenges in the transformation of Brazilian society during the transition from the XIX to XX century, based on the dialogue established between him and the Pionners of education. These educators played a significant role in educational debates and reforms that took place from 1920s to early 1960s. Florestan Fernandes articulated his analysis about the Brazilian social formation with the challenges of public education, by applying a critical analysis of proposals from representatives of the "New School". This article focuses specially on the dialogue between Florestan Fernandes and one of the principal pioneers of education: Fernando de Azevedo. The fundamental difference between Florestan Fernandes and the renovators resides on what Fernandes (1989) denominated as the "utopic conscience" of these educators, as they believed to be possible to trigger a burgess educational revolution in Brazil. Thus, the sociologist developed a significant contribution to the educational theme, inspiring reflections on that field up to these days, since the challenges identified by him in historical roots have yet to be overcome.
