Abstract

The contributions and gaps in constructivism as a theory of reading are discussed. The following contributions are emphasized: (a) a philosophy which proposes respect for the child’s developmental processes; (b) the contributions towards understanding children’s conceptions of writing; (C) guidelines for teacher education; and (d) ideas about when to offer reading instruction and the purpose of school evaluations. The following gaps are discussed: (a) lack of consideration of differences between reading and spelling; (b) absence of explanations for individual differences; and (c) lack of analysis of the consequences of literacy both in terms of learning and reasoning with written language and in terms of amplification of subjects’ range action.
