The scope of this article is to analyze the work as an useful instrument for the instruction of abandoned children at Instituto João Pinheiro  (Belo Horizonte). Firstly, it is to explain the four kinds of work developed at that Institution: domestic, agricultural, handcrafts and workshop labor. Secondly, it is to discuss the discipliner and technical character of such activities, as well as the role wager played, in the whole of the formation of such children.
