This introduction to gender issues in the history of education in England is divided into four parts. It begins with an exploration of matters of theory; secondly considers the contexts in which studies of gender issues are currently located. The third section provides a review of recent literature. Finally some brief conclusions are drawn, this article is concerned principally with England which is but one part of a United Kingdom which today also includes Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland.
